Busting the Myths We Believe About Money

Busting the Myths We Believe About Money

Have you ever believed something for years, only to find out it wasn’t true? That’s the whole premise behind the show MythBusters—using science to test urban legends and challenge assumptions. This week at LifeBrook Church, Pastor Zach pulled that same thread and turned it toward something that affects all of us: money.

Let’s face it—our culture is full of messages about what money can do for us. But what if most of what we believe about money is actually a myth?

We’re in a series called Designed for Generosity, and this week’s message tackled three financial myths that can quietly shape how we live, work, and give. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Myth 1: Money = Satisfaction

From fast food ads to luxury products, we’re constantly sold the idea that money brings happiness. But King Solomon—who literally had it all—called this a “sickening tragedy.” Why? Because wealth never fills the soul. It never gives peace. As Pastor Zach said, “Gold may glitter, but it won’t satisfy your soul.”

Truth: Joy comes not from what we earn, but from recognizing everything we have as a gift from God.

Myth 2: Money = Status

Let’s talk logos. Whether it’s YETI vs. Rubbermaid or Nike vs. no-name brands, we’ve been trained to associate spending with identity. But in Mark 10, we see Jesus lovingly call out a man whose possessions had become his identity—and he walked away grieving.

Truth: Who you are isn’t defined by what you wear, drive, or own—it’s defined by who you follow.

Myth 3: Money = Security

This might be the biggest myth of all. The idea that if we just had a little more, we’d finally be safe. Jesus tells a parable about a man who built bigger barns, only to lose his life that night. Money couldn’t save him.

Truth: Lasting peace comes only through God. Financial security is a mirage without spiritual security.

So what do we do with this?

We stop chasing satisfaction, status, and security in things that fade—and instead find them in Christ. We start taking steps of faith. Whether it’s joining Financial Peace University, giving for the first time, or shifting your mindset about money, the call is the same: trust God more deeply.

At LifeBrook, generosity isn’t just about dollars—it’s about discipleship. Want to be part of what God is doing? Visit lifebrook.church to take your next step today.
