Do you ever feel like you’re running on a treadmill set to max speed—but no matter how fast you go, you’re still not getting anywhere? From hurried school drop-offs to endless to-do lists, life often feels like it’s on overdrive.
In 1989, Time Magazine published an article titled, “How America Has Run Out of Time,” describing how busyness had taken over American life. Decades later, the issue has only gotten worse. We’ve traded rest for rushing, stillness for striving, and peace for productivity. Yet, deep down, we know this lifestyle isn’t sustainable. Thankfully, Psalm 46 offers an invitation to a better way!
The Power of Stillness
Psalm 46 begins with a profound declaration: “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble. Therefore, we will not be afraid…” (Psalm 46:1-2). These verses remind us that God doesn’t ask us to fight every battle alone. He is our refuge, our strength, and our helper. Building on this truth, Psalm 46:10 speaks directly to our restless hearts: “Be still and know that I am God.” Because God is our refuge and strength, we are invited to pause, reflect, and rest in His unchanging nature. This is not just a suggestion; it’s a heartfelt invitation to let God’s peace wash over us, even amidst life’s chaos.
Despite this invitation, many of us still struggle to find peace. Why? Because we let the noise of the world drown out the gentle whisper of God. Instead of resting in His promises, we exhaust ourselves chasing after our own ambitions, building and defending our own kingdoms, often at the expense of seeking God’s. The result is spiritual burnout.
But let’s be honest: being still is hard. We’re so used to multitasking and achieving that the idea of pausing feels almost foreign. Why is stillness so important? Because hurry drains your soul, but stillness renews it.
Embracing Stillness
So how can we embrace stillness in a culture that’s constantly moving? Start small. This week, carve out just 15 minutes a day to unplug. Turn off your phone, find a quiet spot, and spend time with God. Reflect on Psalm 46. Pray. Or simply sit in silence, allowing God’s presence to refresh you.
Stillness is a practice, not a one-time event. It’s a daily choice to pause, reflect, and trust that God is in control. And as you take this step, you’ll discover the truth of Psalm 46:10: God’s peace is always available to those who seek it.
What Will You Choose?
What would happen if you chose to stop running and start resting in God’s presence? This week, take one small step toward stillness. Turn off the noise, lean into God’s promises, and let Him renew your soul.
